Stage 4 of 7
Methodology
Stage 4
Generate Ideas
Purpose of this stage
Use the Joy-CHEC findings and Cardinal Sources together to develop grounded ideas.
Ideas should respond to deficits in the Joy-CHEC assessment but be ultimately driven by assets identified through ongoing Cardinal Sources observation. Pair the Joy-CHEC assessment with the Cardinal Sources to identify where changes could unlock stronger conditions for joy.
Important Tip:
When generating ideas, think ‘blue-sky’ and do not limit yourself with viability, cost, or practical necessities - this will come during the next step when developing pilots and interventions. For now, let your ideas be ‘outside of the box’.

Framework or tool used
Idea Synthesis Canvas: Joy-CHEC innovation × Cardinal Sources assets
Generate ideas by Joy-CHEC findings and Cardinal Sources
The most powerful tool for generating ideas is discussion.
If you want a tool: Download the Idea Synthesis Canvas and map the Joy-CHEC areas of need (where you gave a zero) down the left-hand side, and then have your Cardinal Sources map available, to fill out where they intersect.
Output: ideas that strengthen an asset and respond to a Joy-CHEC area of need.

Idea Synthesis Canvas + Creative Prompts
Creative Prompts:
1.
How could you use one of your strongest Cardinal Sources to address one of your weakest Joy-CHEC areas?
2.
What existing asset could be amplified rather than creating something new?
3.
What would happen if two Cardinal Sources were brought together in a new way?
4.
How could barriers and blocks be removed through design?
